Updated: 2 min 50 sec ago Family Alcoholicm CycleThis entry is the resumption of the family alcoholism blog. As the president and founder of Families in Recovery, I've been around these issues long enough to have something to say now and then. This blog is the place to do it. The opinions and information here are not representative of Families in Recovery and are mine alone. So now, on to the blog... Drug has potential to prevent relapseAn experimental drug that blocks the euphoric feelings associated with drinking may prevent alcoholics from relapsing. The finding, the result of a mouse study at Oregon Health & Science University, could lead to human clinical trials within the next year. Family Meals MatterRecent research out of Minnesota found that sitting down as a family to eat can help girls stay away from drugs and alcohol later in their teens. However, this benefit does not accrue for boys as readily. The study author has this to say about this finding: 10 States, Not Including NY, Enact Payment Codes for In-Office Addiction TreatmentDr. Bertha K. Madras, Deputy Director for Demand Reduction in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), announced that ten States have activated new substance abuse prevention and treatment health codes for screening and brief intervention (SBI) of Medicaid-eligible patients. In Alcohol Treatment, Meds Make A Big Difference, Study SaysAlcohol-dependent individuals who consistently took prescribed medications to prevent withdrawal symptoms and craving had better treatment outcomes than those who didn't take their medication, even among patients receiving behavioral counseling, researchers say. New book for young children impacted by family alcoholismThere is a new children's book that teaches young children about family alcoholism. Since it is often difficult to talk to young children about this, a book should be a great way to start the conversation. "Density" of Family Alcoholism Big Predictor of RiskWhile many university students tend to “mature out” of heavy-drinking behavior by the time they become young adults, some go on to develop alcohol-use disorders (AUDs). Most genetic research on an individual’s family history of alcoholism (FHA) has looked at the parents’ – usually paternal – alcohol use. New findings indicate that looking at the density of FHA – including first-, second- and third-degree relatives – is much more telling. Mental Illness Leads to Greater Risk of Addiction in YouthResearchers from Massachusetts General Hospital (MGH) say that adolescents with bipolar disorder are more likely to use alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. "You're every bit as drunk, you're just an awake drunk"Research has come out recently that teens who are most likely to consume energy drinks are also most likely to engage in other high-risk behaviors such as alcohol, drugs, unsafe sex, etc. 50% increase in PTSD for soldiers means even more alcohol abuse and dependenceRecent research is showing that the number of troops with new cases of post-traumatic stress disorder jumped by a dramatic 50 percent in 2007 subsequent to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan. Officials believe approximately 40,000 diagnosed cases way understates the real numbers, since so many soldiers keep their condition a secret. Stop-Smoking Drug Linked to Suicide, Still Endorsed by GovernmentThe stop-smoking drug Chantix has been linked to higher rates of suicide. Yet the government is still endorsing it in stop-smoking literature. This might be a case of politics needing to catch up to science, but since a high rate of alcoholics and people in recovery also smoke, it is important to be aware of the risks. Women Closing Alcoholism Gender GapThere is often a perception that alcoholics are mostly men. The image of the alcoholic father coming home late from the bar is fairly pervasive. The fact is, there have always been alcoholic mothers as well. Prescription Addiction Treatment Drugs Cause Rising Suicide ConcernReports of increased risk of depression and suicide are dimming the future prospects of drugs designed to treat addictions to alcohol, tobacco and other drugs. |
