Drug has potential to prevent relapse

An experimental drug that blocks the euphoric feelings associated with drinking may prevent alcoholics from relapsing. The finding, the result of a mouse study at Oregon Health & Science University, could lead to human clinical trials within the next year.

Family Meals Matter

10 States, Not Including NY, Enact Payment Codes for In-Office Addiction Treatment

Dr. Bertha K. Madras, Deputy Director for Demand Reduction in the White House Office of National Drug Control Policy (ONDCP), announced that ten States have activated new substance abuse prevention and treatment health codes for screening and brief intervention (SBI) of Medicaid-eligible patients.

In Alcohol Treatment, Meds Make A Big Difference, Study Says

Alcohol-dependent individuals who consistently took prescribed medications to prevent withdrawal symptoms and craving had better treatment outcomes than those who didn't take their medication, even among patients receiving behavioral counseling, researchers say.

"Density" of Family Alcoholism Big Predictor of Risk

While many university students tend to “mature out” of heavy-drinking behavior by the time they become young adults, some go on to develop alcohol-use disorders (AUDs). Most genetic research on an individual’s family history of alcoholism (FHA) has looked at the parents’ – usually paternal – alcohol use. New findings indicate that looking at the density of FHA – including first-, second- and third-degree relatives – is much more telling.

50% increase in PTSD for soldiers means even more alcohol abuse and dependence

Recent research is showing that the number of troops with new cases of post-traumatic stress disorder jumped by a dramatic 50 percent in 2007 subsequent to the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan.

Officials believe approximately 40,000 diagnosed cases way understates the real numbers, since so many soldiers keep their condition a secret.

Stop-Smoking Drug Linked to Suicide, Still Endorsed by Government

The stop-smoking drug Chantix has been linked to higher rates of suicide. Yet the government is still endorsing it in stop-smoking literature. This might be a case of politics needing to catch up to science, but since a high rate of alcoholics and people in recovery also smoke, it is important to be aware of the risks.
